Heatwave Intensifies Across Central and Southern Vietnam, with Temps Hitting 39°C
The National Weather Forecast Center reported that on April 5, temperatures in Thanh Hóa to Gia Lai reached 35-37°C, with some areas exceeding 39°C. The region experienced low humidity, ranging from 40-45%, exacerbating the heat. In the Central and Southern regions, prolonged exposure to such conditions poses significant risks, including heat exhaustion and dehydration.
Nights in these areas saw temperatures dropping to 23-26°C, but daytime highs remained dangerously high. The National Weather Forecast Center warned that the heatwave could persist for several days, with conditions worsening in urban areas where concrete and asphalt surfaces absorb and radiate heat. Meteorologists emphasized that the temperature discrepancy between urban and rural zones could make the perceived heat feel up to 4°C higher than actual readings.
This creates a critical need for public awareness, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly and children.
Heatwave Threatens to Spread to Northwest and Northern Regions, Heightening Health and Safety Risks
The National Weather Forecast Center warned that the heatwave could expand to the Northwest and Northern regions, including Hanoi. In Hanoi, daytime temperatures reached 31-33°C, with occasional clouds and light rain providing temporary relief. However, the risk of heat-related illnesses remains high, particularly in areas where humidity remains below 50%.
The combination of rising temperatures and increased electricity demand has raised concerns about fire hazards. Experts noted that the dry air and high energy usage could lead to power outages or electrical faults, compounding the dangers of the heatwave. Additionally, prolonged exposure to high temperatures may cause heatstroke, especially for those working outdoors or engaging in physical activities.
Authorities are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid peak sun hours, and use air conditioning or fans to mitigate the effects of the heat. Emergency services have also been placed on high alert to respond to heat-related emergencies, including hospitalizations and fire incidents.
Persistent Heatwave Looms for Days, With Urban Areas Experiencing Higher Temperature Readings
The heatwave is expected to last for multiple days, with the National Weather Forecast Center predicting continued high temperatures in Thanh Hóa to Gia Lai and the Central/Southern regions. In Hanoi, the temperature range of 23-33°C is projected to persist, though the city’s urban heat island effect could push perceived temperatures beyond 40°C. Residents in densely populated areas like Ho Chi Minh City face similar challenges, with temperatures reaching 33-35°C and humidity levels between 45-50%.
The prolonged exposure to such conditions increases the likelihood of heat-related illnesses, particularly for those without access to cooling infrastructure. Authorities are advising the public to take immediate precautions, including staying indoors during peak heat hours and ensuring access to clean water. The National Weather Forecast Center will continue monitoring the situation, with updates expected to guide
